Please note that this competition is led by CIHR. Applications must be submitted through ResearchNet only.
Génome Québec is pleased to be a competition partner in the Team grants funding opportunity entitled “Embracing Diversity to Achieve Precision & Health Equity” launched by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
Objective
The objective of this funding opportunity is to fund new research that will improve health and achieve more equitable outcomes in nutrition, metabolic health, and chronic high burden diseases, as well as Sexually Transmitted and Blood-Borne Infections (STBBI), across the life course of diverse groups of people in Canada by:
- Developing precision medicine approaches to characterize the variability that underlies mechanisms of disease, to prevent, detect, and intervene effectively in terms of disease susceptibility, progression, resilience and reversibility, and treatment;
- Increasing our understanding of interactions between structural, social, environmental, and biological determinants of health in Indigenous communities that underlie heterogeneity in health and disease;
- Increasing our understanding of interactions between structural, social, environmental, and biological determinants of health with particular emphasis on a diversity of populations who have historically experienced inequitable outcomes in Canada and at-risk groups that underlie heterogeneity in health and disease.
Funds Available by CIHR and their partners
The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $41,010,000 (not including Supplementary Partner Funding), enough to fund approximately 38 Engagement Grants, 19 Team Grants, and one supplement for a Knowledge Mobilization Hub (for details: ResearchNet)
Supplementary Funding from Génome Québec
Génome Québec will provide additional funding up to $100,000 per year for up to 5 years ($500,000 in total) to the one top-ranked team grant application in Québec which will produce omics data and/or develop tools to integrate such omics data with other types of data. Génome Québec’s goal is to contribute to precision health (including disease prevention, diagnosis, care, or treatment), by using omics and/or promote the use and adoption of omics technologies.
The following conditions apply:
- GQ can add up to $500,000 to a project led by a Nominated Principal Applicant (NPA) affiliated with an eligible organization in Québec. The NPA must be an independent researcher affiliated with a Quebec postsecondary institution and/or its affiliated institutions (including hospitals, research institutes and other non-profit organizations with an explicit research mandate).
- To receive the entire amount available by GQ ($500,000), a minimum of $1,000,000 of the funds (from CIHR or eligible competition level partners, if applicable) must be spent in Québec.
- GQ can fund up to a maximum of 1/3 of eligible expenses incurred in Quebec and GQ’s financial guidelines apply. Should the above-mentioned Québec-spent amount (of CIHR’s or eligible competition level partners) be lower than $1,000,000, GQ’s funding will be decreased proportionally to ensure GQ’s contribution does not exceed 1/3.
- GQ will not fund projects with a Québec-based CIHR budget (including eligible competition level partners’ contribution) lower than $500,000.
- GQ will consider the amount provided by CIHR and its competition level partners as co-funding. Please see GQ’s financial guidelines for their detailed conditions, which include requesting reporting on the funds provided by CIHR and its competition level partners.
- Total Génome Québec funds used for equipment purchases cannot exceed 25% of the approved Génome Québec contribution. Génome Québec’s contribution cannot be used to purchase or rent any equipment worth more than $25,000 before taxes.
- Eligible co-funding for GQ’s funds excludes contributions from other organizations funded by the ministère de l’Économie, de l’Innovation et de l’Énergie du Québec (MEIE).
- The highest ranked fundable project (determined by CIHR’s review committee) which focuses on omics studies deemed relevant by Génome Québec, and which fulfills the budgetary conditions mentioned, will be selected for GQ supplementary funding. In exceptional circumstances, a second project may be funded, to allow GQ to spend funds reserved for this competition.
- Omics: Designates studies that use high-throughput technologies to gather genetic information of a cell or an organism. This includes the function of specific genes/gene clusters, their interactions with each other or the surrounding environment, and the activation and suppression of genes. The definition encompasses disciplines, such as genomics, epigenomics, lipidomics, metabolomics, metagenomics, nutrigenomics, pharmacogenomics, proteomics, transcriptomics, and bioinformatics. Studies that integrate data from medical imaging, electronic health records or portable devices are welcome if they are integrated with omics data.
