Crohn’s disease (CD) is one of the two main forms of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), and is a chronic, lifelong disease that can occur at any age, although the majority are diagnosed as young adults. Approximately one in every 150 Canadians has IBD, with approximately 10,000 new patients being diagnosed every year. Due to the non-specific nature of IBD symptoms, as well as the limited access to IBD specialists and advanced medical equipment that is required for diagnosis, there is a significant delay between the appearance of symptoms and diagnosis of CD. The current project aims to develop a cost-effective blood-based laboratory test that will enable a more rapid diagnosis of CD. A more rapid diagnosis is important as it has been previously shown that early diagnosis is associated with better outcomes for individuals living with CD.
