Modern sequencing technologies have made it possible to identify the genetic code of pediatric cancer at a very high level of resolution. As a result, researchers have been able to refine the molecular classification in pediatric hematology and oncology, which has virtually transformed cancer taxonomy. Since 2010, many initiatives involving the genomic characterization of pediatric cancer have demonstrated the unprecedented impact of advanced technologies on the management of childhood cancer patients.

The genomics era has influenced the diagnosis, prognostic classification and therapeutic options involved in cancer care and improved treatment response monitoring and the identification of conditions that predispose a person to cancer. This information has become crucial in ensuring the optimal management of children with cancer using precision medicine. Approaches based on standard molecular biology are no longer suited to the genetic complexity of this patient group. Our research program aims to make full use of clinical genomics in the health care system to treat children with cancer in Québec, while working closely with the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux. Integrating genomics into diagnostic clinical labs is a critical step in ensuring quality patient care through personalized therapies in a manner that supports the rational use of resources.
