What regulates our genes and how are they controlled? This projects aims to understand when and where genes in our bodies are switched on and off. The research focuses on determining the specific elements responsible for gene activity in human and mouse genome sequences. Computer-generated comparisons are used to identify similarities and to gather precise information on the function and impact of these elements. The goal is to better understand gene regulation and its relationship to various disease states – particularly cancer – and to develop important applications in gene-based therapies.

The scientists involved in this project will work closely with international leaders from the European Bioinformatics Institute and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute.
